Thetford Pond House
Location: Thetford, Vermont
Description: After using a picturesque set of barns as a summer house for many years, the owners decided to build an energy efficient, winterized home. Located on the footprint of the former chicken coop, the new three bedroom house complements a 19th century barn to define a sheltered, south facing courtyard garden. Leading to the new pond, stone walls and paths gracefully negotiate the changing levels around the house. The rooms were shaped to reflect the ownersÕ desires for intimate spaces with flexible functions and strong connection to the landscape. Careful detailing with low maintenance materials on the exterior and the use of exposed framing, tinted plaster and salvaged building materials on the interior create an individual character and strong sense of place.
